Daniel Slaughter, M.D.
Dr. Slaughter is Board Certified in Otolaryngology and Sleep Medicine, by the American Board of Otolaryngology. He has been in practice for more than 25 years in Austin, TX.
Dr. Slaughter has been actively involved in the development of leading-edge technologies in Otolaryngology. He was integral in the development and FDA approval of balloon sinuplasty technology, and served as a Center of Excellence for Entellus Medical/ Stryker Medical for over 10 years, providing mentoring of Otolaryngologists nationwide in balloon sinuplasty.
Dr. Slaughter created an IV sedation protocol for office balloon sinuplasty cases to optimize comfort and safety and provide the comprehensive structural correction. As part of this protocol, he realized that no perfectly designed airway had yet been designed. Traditional oral airways lacked the ability to adequately oxygenate or measure CO2. An LMA required an anesthesia machine and full circuit and general anesthesia with all of its long-term recovery and side effects.
For two years, Dr. Slaughter created and tweaked different 3D printed oral airway prototypes to develop the perfect airway for IV sedation. A design with a closed channel separating the oxygen delivery port and the capnography port along with a custom tight seal for the nasal cannula was made. A smooth molded airway with these features was created and produced commercially. The Laryngeal Oral Airway is now registered with the FDA and has a patent.
